Jacqueline Welch's current painting practice is narrative and addresses the animal as companion. Religious symbol and the sublime landscape are also of interest to her. Her process is drawing intensive. Paint is applied in semi-transparent layers so that parts of the drawing show through. In this recent work each dog is the patron saint for a particular human idiosyncrasy. Through these paintings she advocates for shelter dogs and their right to be life-long companions. Her concerns involve the current debate of no-kill shelters cs. traditional shelters that periodically euthanize unwanted pets, and the rise in abandoned pets due to the failing US economy. The sacred and pagan elements in her work are derived from her Irish-Catholic background and her interest in medieval painting and Celtic art.

Fashioning Kimono: Art Deco and Modernism in Japan January 31–April 4, 2010 in the Grand Gallery
Nearly 100 extraordinary examples of kimono created between the 1890s and the 1950s tell the story of how Japan’s traditional national dress was influenced by technological advances in silk production and exposure to Western cultures. Included are everyday garments; intricately embroidered ceremonial robes; boys’ kimono stenciled with cars, airplanes and battleships; and colorful examples with Art Deco patterns that heralded the emergence of Japan’s “new woman.” All are drawn from the famed Montgomery Collection in Lugano, Switzerland.
This exhibition is organized and circulated by Art Services International, Alexandria, VA. Support for the national tour and catalog has been provided by The E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Foundation.
This exhibition is made possible in Rochester by the Gallery Council of the Memorial Art Gallery and the Robert L. and Mary L. Sproull Fund.

Rembrandt. Master Etchings from the Collection of Tobia and Dr. Morton Mower February 26-May 23 in the Lockhart Gallery
This exhibition showcases more than 40 rare etchings loaned by Baltimore cardiologist Dr. Morton Mower and his wife, Tobia Mower, whose fascination with Rembrandt’s innovative techniques and mastery of printmaking led to the formation of their extraordinary private collection. The selection explores the versatility of Rembrandt’s style as well as the breadth of his subjects, which range from scenes of daily life, portraits, landscapes, and historical and biblical narratives. As Dr. Mower has noted, "Etching was the photography of Rembrandt’s day, and he gives us a window into both the everyday life and cosmopolitan themes that captured his imagination."
Sponsored by an anonymous donor in honor and memory of the Rochester General Hospital Unit that served in WWII.

Chicago stepping is a name given to a dance that has evolved over the years from various other dances. Originally created in Chicago's predominately African American neighborhoods, the dance has morphed from its beginnings with the Jitterbug in the 30s and 40s, to the Offtime in the 50s, to the Walk and the Chicago Bop in the 60s and 70s.
The Chicago Step is now more widely known nationwide than it's ever been. Due to the popularity of songs like R. Kelly's "Step in the Name of Love", and Gerald LeVert's "Didn't We?", the nation has gotten a taste of the steppers style. Movies such as "Love Jones" (which depicts an event formerly hosted by local Chicago DJ Herb Kent, known as "The World's Largest Steppers Contest"), brought the dance and culture to the big screen. Stepping is usually coordinated into events called "Stepper's Sets", which typically cater to an older crowd. Due to the popularity of the aforementioned artists (along with old school artists), stepping is enjoying a nationwide "coming out party" with "Sets" popping up from New York to Los Angeles.
Danielle of MAK 3 Dance Club is inviting you to help get Rochester involved with the Steppin Community. You’ve heard about Chicago, LA, Atlanta, NYC, even Buffalo, all of which have some of the best steppers in the country. Well, Danielle (who was trained by one of Chicago’s best, Dave Maxx) will be teaching class every other Thursday at Venu. Make sure you tell all your family and friends and we hope to see you with your dance shoes on!!!!
(Dance partners welcome but not necessary)
